Lavrov, Omani Counterpart Warn Against Gulf Escalation
(MENAFN) Russia's Foreign Ministry announced Thursday that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone call with Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, with Middle East stability dominating the agenda.
The two diplomats zeroed in on mounting tensions across the Persian Gulf, according to a ministry statement. "During the talks, the ministers discussed key issues on the Middle East agenda, with a particular focus on the situation in the Persian Gulf region," the ministry said in a statement.
Both nations voiced serious concern over the threat of renewed hostilities, jointly urging the protection of civilian infrastructure from strikes — whether on Iranian soil or across neighboring Arab states.
On the diplomatic front, the two sides pushed back against any move to inflame tensions at the international level. "The ministers also stressed the need to avoid artificially escalating tensions within the UN Security Council and called for an immediate return to political and diplomatic efforts based on international law and taking into account the legitimate interests of all countries in the region," it noted.
Lavrov pledged Moscow's active engagement in de-escalation efforts, pointing specifically to the framework laid out in Russia's Collective Security Concept for the Persian Gulf as a practical roadmap for achieving regional stability.
Beyond the crisis talks, both parties reviewed the broader trajectory of Russian-Omani bilateral ties, with the ministry noting continued momentum across multiple areas of cooperation.
