US, Iran Kick Off Second Round of Indirect Nuclear Talks in Geneva

(MENAFN) A second round of indirect nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran got underway in Geneva on Tuesday, with both sides convening at the Omani Embassy under the mediation of Oman.

According to a reporter on the ground, the talks commenced formally at the embassy as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led his delegation to the negotiating venue, followed shortly by the American delegation. Both sides held separate meetings with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who is facilitating the dialogue.

Local reports indicate that Tehran is pushing in this round for the complete removal of sanctions, alongside discussions on confidence-building measures tied to its nuclear program. The US delegation is headed by envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner.

The two countries first resumed indirect nuclear diplomacy earlier this month in Muscat — also under Omani stewardship — nearly eight months after negotiations collapsed in the wake of the Iran-Israel conflict. Both delegations signaled cautious optimism following that initial session, despite a backdrop of escalating tensions fueled by a US military buildup in the Persian Gulf.

Ahead of Tuesday's talks, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed the session would remain firmly focused on the nuclear dossier. He also disclosed that Araghchi had met Monday with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to address technical matters related to Iran's nuclear file.

President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters Monday while traveling to Washington, signaled his personal engagement in the process.

"I'll be involved in those talks indirectly, and they'll be very important," Trump told reporters Monday en route to Washington when asked what he expected from the second round of the indirect nuclear negotiations.

"We'll see what can happen," he added.
