IRGC Navy Claims All Day Surveillance of Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) Iran’s top naval official confirmed on Monday that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintains “full 24-hour intelligence dominance” over the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.

Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri made the statement shortly after the IRGC launched a military exercise in the region, which its public relations unit described as “combined, live and purpose-driven” drills.

As stated by reports, Tangsiri emphasized that the IRGC Navy’s surveillance covers surface, aerial, and sub-surface domains. He added that this intelligence framework ensures the “safe passage of vessels” through the strait, which sees more than 80 oil tankers and container ships daily, representing a substantial portion of global maritime trade.

The admiral explained that the drills span both the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, with islands in the area characterized as “impregnable fortresses.” He underscored that the protection of these islands, as well as the surrounding waterways, “is the responsibility of the IRGC Navy,” which conducts “routine annual exercises to ensure security” in the strategic region.

Tangsiri noted that the exercises form part of the IRGC’s yearly program, with a distinct focus on “tactical maneuvers and equipment being employed,” some of which have yet to be publicly disclosed. He stressed that the “rapid and decisive response” of operational units to maritime threats lies at the “core of the drills.”

He further explained that IRGC rapid-response teams train regularly to detect, inspect, and, if necessary, seize “unauthorized vessels” operating in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
