Iran-US Indirect Nuclear Negotiations Kick Off in Geneva
Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi is steering the mediation effort, with Oman once again playing its well-established role as trusted intermediary between the two adversarial powers.
Washington has dispatched U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner to lead its delegation, while Tehran is represented by Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who heads what Fars described as a "diplomatic and specialized" team. Upon his arrival at the Omani embassy, Araghchi held a preliminary meeting with the Omani foreign minister, the agency added.
According to media, the negotiations are narrowly focused on two core issues — Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of U.S. sanctions — with no other items on the table.
Ahead of Tuesday's session, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi offered a glimpse of Tehran's negotiating posture in an interview Sunday, signaling conditional flexibility while drawing a firm red line. He confirmed that Iran could discuss diluting its 60 percent-enriched uranium as the country's proof of flexibility, but flatly ruled out zero enrichment on Iranian soil.
The latest round of talks unfolds against a charged geopolitical backdrop, with tensions running high between Tehran and Washington and a mounting U.S. military presence across West Asia adding pressure to an already fragile diplomatic process.
The first round of negotiations, held in Muscat — Oman's capital — on February 6, was characterized by both sides as a "good start," though it produced no tangible breakthrough, leaving the burden of progress squarely on this week's Geneva session.
